Black Educators Matter

I thought I would serve as a role model for young female students of color, giving back to them more than what I had received...but my journey to landing a permanent role was faced with advesary. Learn more about my experience in The Atlantic.

Black Students Matter

Recently my students have the opportunity to engage in discussion about how the Black Lives Matter movement has impacted their lives. Their deep connection and yearning to have a voice in the movement has caused them to bring up the topic multiple times. After submitting a written response on how Black Lives Matter impacts our school, community and self-perception, one male student stated "I want to hear what others wrote on the topic!" He preceded by stating a specific students name. I am convinced that this particular student might not have ever been so engaged in dialogue without being motivated by the cultural relevance of the movement. A movement that is not so much a movement when it is honestly just the awareness that their daily lives have value. A value that was never lost its authenticity, yet it was a value that was never internalized by some of our youngest members in the black and brown community.
